There are 2 ways to get EC from Plan B NOLA:
See our FAQ below for important information. |
A quick note: EC in clinics and pharmacies around the city run anywhere from $42-60. We purchase EC at $10-11 a dose.
If you are able, please donate back the cost of the pill to keep the project going. You can also leave cash with the Community Support Member (CSM) when you pick up the pill or send money through Venmo @REJACNOLA. We thank you in advance!

Please call the Outpost for hours and to ensure they have EC in stock BEFORE showing up.
Be aware that some Outposts may have staff that are mandatory reporters. This means that if a minor (anyone under the age of 18) discloses abuse (sexual or otherwise), the person must report it to the state. |

Why would I need EC?
|
Sometimes condoms break, or you start your pack of pills late, or just didn't use birth control this time. Although it is difficult to measure, EC helps prevent pregnancy by up to 88% when taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex.
|
What happens when I contact the healthline?
|
Be prepared to share: your name, neighborhood, how long since the unprotected sex and, if you called the healthline, whether or not it's okay to leave a voicemail. EC is less effective for people who weigh over 160 lbs. There was a small study, however, that showed that taking 2 pills can make it more effective. Let us know if you will need 2 pills.
Within a few hours a CSM will be in touch to arrange a meeting time and place that is convenient for you and the CSM. Once you meet up, you will get the EC, condoms, a pregnancy test and an information zine. You will also be asked to fill out a short survey, as well as whether or not you want to donate anything to the project. Please note that many of our CSMs are mandatory reporters. This means that if a minor (anyone below the age of 18) discloses abuse (sexual or otherwise) to a CSM who is a mandatory reporter, the CSM must report the abuse to the state. |
What happens if I get the EC from an outpost?
|
Simply ask for emergency contraception. The Community Support Member (CSM) at the outpost will just ask for your initials and to fill out a short, optional survey. You will also be asked if you would like to donate to the project. You can leave cash with the CSM or donate here.
You will be given the EC (we use a generic brand of levonorgestrel 1.5mg tablet), condoms, a pregnancy test, and some information on when to take the test for accurate results. |
Does my weight effect how well the pill works?
|
It could. Studies have shown that a dose of the pill is less effective for those over 160 pounds. A small study showed that taking 2 doses could make it more effective. If this is a concern, you can ask for a second dose.
Although 2 pills of over-the-counter EC may be more effective than 1 or none, there are 2 other options that are more effective for anyone, especially those with higher BMIs. Both need a prescription. They are Ella and the Paragard IUD. You can read more about them here. If accessing these methods isn't possible, we are happy to provide 2 pills of the over-the-counter EC. |
Is EC the abortion pill?
|
No. EC will not affect an already existing pregnancy. If you know you are pregnant, do not take EC. There are no dangers associated with taking it. If you need resources on how to access abortion care, see ReJAC's Resources page.

What is Plan B NOLA?
|
Plan B NOLA is a project of the Reproductive Justice Action Collective (ReJAC). We are not healthcare providers, rather community members who want to increase access to this important and time-sensitive medication. Learn more about the project on our About page.

I work somewhere that might be interested in being a Community Outpost. What can I do?
|
Get in touch! We especially need Community Outposts that are open on the weekend and are looking to partner with additional places in New Orleans East, the West Bank, the Lower 9th Ward, Metairie, and Kenner.
